Week 1 – Amusing Ourselves to Death

In this task I took a game and studied two of it’s trailers to see how it helped me develop an understanding of the game. This was in order to see how companies promoted their products in different ways and using such things as juxtaposition.

Valiant Hearts: The Great War

What I can get from the reveal trailer:

Institution/s: Developer: Ubisoft Montpellier. Publisher: Ubisoft

Industries: Media product – Video game

Representation: It represents a dark and lonely world

Genre: It shows off that the game is side-scrolling platformer

Narrative: It’s a narrative of past experiences and the people the narrator has met and talks about what they were like and that their stories will always live on and be remembered.

Text + meaning: This trailer showed of the idea of a dark world that’s filled with sadness and death.

Different Products: Some other products from the developer:

Rayman, From Dust, ZombiU, Beyond Good & Evil and more.

Some other products from the publisher: Assassins Creed, Armored Core, Brothers in Arms, Far Cry and more.

Juxtaposition: It starts off with the dog on screen being hopeful of finding his friends to complete despair when it reaches a graveyard but at the same time it goes from being dark at end the panning out over a much lighter and better looking landscape.

Come Back trailer:

Institution/s: Developer: Ubisoft Montpellier. Publisher: Ubisoft

Industries: Media product – Video game

Representation: It still continues to show a dark and difficult world but this time filled with more violence and it shows off more of a struggle.

Genre: This trailer still shows the game as side-scrolling but less a platformer and more as a puzzle adventure game.

Narrative and Juxtaposition: This trailer shows some juxtaposition, it starts with people being torn apart from each other and slowly starts to show more hope when the dog rescues the man under the rubble, and then it portrays the struggles of the characters but in the end it shows them apart until they are presumably finally together but they’re only together in death. This backed up by the narrator talking about how in the darkest times light can still shine, but it ends with a grim reminder that sometimes people sacrifice everything and not everyone makes it.

Text + meaning: This trailer reinforces the idea that it’s a lonely, depressing world that’s filled with war and death.
